What is Feliway®?

It is a synthetic analogue of naturally occurring feline facial pheromones of cats. These pheromones act to eliminate the problem of urine marking by calming stressed cats. It has also been found that cats do not urinate where facial pheromones have been placed. These pheromones convey a message of well being and a feeling of security.

What are pheromones?

Pheromones are extremely widespread in the animal kingdom and are used to communicate between members of the same species. Thus, the pheromones given off by one individual can affect and change the behaviour of other individuals of the same species. Examples of pheromones with which pet owners will already be familiar are the sex pheromones of dogs and cats. In addition to making the bitch or queen more attractive to the male when they are in season they can also influence territorial marking, aggression, etc.

What pheromone is in Feliway® and is this safe to humans?

The pheromones in Feliway® are a synthetic copy of the familiarisation facial pheromones that cats use to mark objects in their environment. As pheromones are species specific, feline pheromones will have no effect on humans. The actual concentration of pheromone in the air at any one time is tiny.

Will Feliway® have any affect on other pets?

Pheromones are species specific and no negative effect on other pets is to be expected. You can use D.A.P. and Feliway® diffusers at the same time in the same room.

For how long should I use Feliway®?

Feliway® should be used for at least a month. Application should continue even if you see an improvement.

How long will it take before I see signs of improvement?

It depends of the nature and the extent of the problem for which you are using Feliway®. Some cats may show signs of improvement in less than a week. In any case, we advise to continue using Feliway® for one month, before assessing its effectiveness.

What should I do if the problem is not solved after a month?

Ensure that you have been using the product for one month before you conclude that it is not working. Note that some cases take longer to respond. Check that the diffuser has been plugged in a place where it could diffuse without restrictions and it has been left switched on 24 hours a day for 4 weeks.

Where should I plug in the Feliway® diffuser?

Plug in the Feliway® Diffuser in the room most affected by the marking behaviour. If the cat marks in several rooms (with a total area of more than 70sq. m.), plug in a second diffuser in one of the other rooms that have been marked. If Feliway® is used for another behavioural problem the diffuser should be used in the room where the cat spends most of its time during the day. It is recommended that each diffuser will cover an area of 50 to 70 sq. m. The diffuser should not be covered and should not be placed behind a door or underneath furniture.

Why shouldn’t I plug the diffuser under furniture?

Oil vapour (carrying the pheromones) will rise in a column of warm air above the device. If this rising air is blocked (e.g. under a shelf, table, cabinet, etc) the oil may re-condense and leave a visible mark. Circulation of pheromone will be impaired.

Why should I use the Feliway® diffuser and Feliway® spray?

In multi-cat households the use of the diffuser will reduce the general level of stress while the spray can be applied to specific areas to start with. It may not be necessary to use the spray for more than two weeks.

Is the Feliway® device safe?

The Feliway® Diffuser device complies with Australian and New Zealand Electrical Safety Standards Approval No. CS8117N. Similar devices are widely used across Australia for plug-in air fresheners, mosquito repellents, etc.

Should I use the device if I suffer from asthma?

In addition to the pheromone content, Feliway® contains a paraffin-type mineral oil of a kind common to other air freshener devices. We are not aware of specific problems for asthma sufferers from such devices, however if you consider yourself to be particularly sensitive, or have had problems when using similar devices in the past, then we advise you to use the device only after consulting with your doctor.

Is Feliway® diffuser safe to use if I am pregnant?

Yes, it is safe to use if you are pregnant.

Do I need to change the refill even though the liquid has not completely run out?

We advise you to change the refill after 30 days even if some liquid is still visible in the bottle.

The level of liquid appears not to be going down?

Slight variations will occur depending on air turnover. Check that the wick is not broken (should extend from the bottom of the liquid to a level flush with the top of the heated ceramic plate). Check the device is turned on all the time. Finally, try the device in a different electrical socket.

Can I use Feliway® diffuser in the same room as a plug in air freshener?

Yes - But be aware that some strong smelling air fresheners and deodorisers can upset sensitive cats.

The diffuser smells like it is burning? Is it safe?

New diffusers may smell slightly when first switched on, just as an electrical heater might when dust has collected on it. Diffusers in a very dusty environment may smell more persistently. Be sure that your dog or cat has not urinated or sprayed onto the device.

Should I switch off the Feliway® diffuser at night?

No - the diffuser should be left on continuously day and night. Efficacy was demonstrated in clinical trials with uninterrupted use of the diffuser, which allows the cat to perceive consistently the pheromone’s signal.

Can I use the Feliway® refill in the D.A.P. device?

Yes the device is the same, although they should never be used in any other plug in device such as an air freshener.

Can I use the liquid from the Feliway® spray in the Feliway® diffuser?

No, the Feliway® spray is alcohol based and should never be used in the Feliway® diffuser.

Why do cats urine mark?

Urine marking occurs when one or more events upset your cat’s routine:

- Sexual excitation, more frequent in the Spring and early Summer.

- All stressful situations, e.g. when there is a new arrival or when moving

house or travelling.

- Cats will also mark the boundaries of their territory.

How do I clean the area where the cat has marked?

It is essential that urine marks are not cleaned with bleach or ammonia based products. We recommend you clean the urine mark with an enzymatic cleaner e.g. BioZet™, rinsing the site with water and letting it dry.
